The Game Awards is pretty much the Oscars or the Grammys of the video game industry. Aside from E3, it’s the biggest annual event for video games, and it celebrates the standout developers and releases of the year. While 2020 might have been a rough year (to say it lightly), it definitely didn’t have a shortage of amazing new games.

Just like every other huge video game event this year, The Game Awards 2020 went virtual to ensure the safety of the would-be attendees of the show. With nominees tuning in live to await the announcement of each award’s winner, you can think of TGA 2020 as the world’s most important Zoom call in the gaming industry.

The show, which wrapped up earlier today had a series of unexpected wins as well as some big announcements for upcoming games, but if you don’t have the time to watch the entire 3-hour livestream, here’s a recap of all the winners and major announcements from The Game Awards 2020.

It wouldn’t be an awards show without a long list of best-in-category awards. TGA 2020 celebrated the best of every major game genre as well as the best work in the various fields that go into video game production, including voice acting performances, music and scoring, and game direction. Despite many esports events this year either being cancelled or postponed, the esports industry was quick to get back on its feet and transition to hosting virtual and COVID protocol-compliant physical events. To celebrate the esports industry as well as its athletes, TGA 2020 also handed out a number of esports awards.

And of course, the crowning event of every TGA show is the awarding of Game of the Year. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, God of War, and Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice were the recipients of this award in the past three years, and those three games have definitely set the bar high for 2020. Technical achievements, impact, and of course the overall gameplay are factored into deciding on a G.O.T.Y. winner, and no game this year fills out all these criteria better than The Last of Us Part II. Whether you love or hate the story, it’s an undeniably amazing video game experience that will remain among the greats in video game history. Besides, what better game to give the award, than one about zombies being born from a deadly virus?
