It’s hard to describe the specifics of what GRIS really or what its about. The narrative is purposely vague and filled with powerful imagery, visual metaphors and symbolism leaving much to the interpretation of the player. GRIS aims to evoke and inspire awe, through its gorgeous hand draw visuals, light puzzle solving and engaging platforming elements. Everything in GRIS is gorgeous and evocative.
From what best we can describe and without delving into spoilers, GRIS’ narrative echoes that of Alice in Wonderland, following one girl’s journey through a fantastical world and discovering a piece of herself in the process. Perfect fodder for an afternoon of introspection!
Developer: Concerned Ape
Platform: PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation Vita, iOS, Android
Nothing says relaxing better than a day in the farm. Stardew Valley gives you the chance to live out your barnyard fantasies, tending the crops, feeding the livestock and basically just chilling out in the countryside. The narrative of the game is also fairly apt with the main character opting to step out of the hustle and bustle of city life and take care of their deceased grandfather’s estate. Wouldn’t we all just want to do that instead?
The game is also deceptively deep so those looking for a more fleshed out experience to dive into will not be disappointed. If that’s not enough the game also has 4-player co-op multiplayer so you and three other friends can get that quality chill hang while building your dream farm estate.
Developer: Phil Fish
Platform: Xbox 360, PC, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, PlayStation Vita, iOS
Fez is a classic indie darling that deconstructs traditional side-scrolling tropes while maintaining a charm and an attitude all its own. You play as Gomez, a tiny being living in a 2D world. Along the way, Gomez makes a mind-blowing new discovery: the Third Dimension. With this new knowledge, our plucky hero goes on an epic journey to explore the world as he knew it from, quite literally, a different point of view.
OLD MAN’S JOURNEY
Developer: Broke Rules
Platform: Android, iOS, PC, Nintendo Switch,Playstation 4, and Xbox One
Old Man’s Journey is a wonderful tale of reflection, discovery, life and loss. You play as an old man who journeys through the beautifully painted countryside. Along the way, he finds familiar sights and sounds that remind him of his previous adventures, past experiences and former loves throughout his life.
Mechanically, the game also adds a clever twist to the point-and-click adventure genre: You can manipulate the background and the foreground to make a path for the old man to pass through. Need to reach the roof of the house? Just drag a mountain in the distance to line up with the edge and create a ramp. Is the other hill out of reach? No its not! Line up its sides with the ledge you’re on and just walk on over! If you’re in the mood for a light but profound bout of soul searching then look no further than Old Man’s Journey.
