DOTA 2 Patch Released Midway Through SEA Games DOTA 2 Matches
Posted by Raphael Leynes December 08, 2019

With the SEA Games-Dota 2 Discipline fully underway Saturday, at the San Juan Arena in San Juan City, developer Valve released a new update to the game-Patch 7.23c- midway through the first ever Dota 2 Medal Event for SEA Games 2019. Teams were forced to adjust and consider the new updates which changed quite a bit about the game. This sudden change also comes off the back of the massive Dota 2 Outlanders patch that hit just one week ago which already completely changed the way the MOBA was played.

In today’s gaming landscape, patches and updates are largely considered to be the commonplace. These give the game’s developers a way to apply fixes to different bugs and issues as well as add new features to the game. In some cases, like in the recent Dota 2 Outlanders Patch, if the updates and additions are big enough they completely change the game. Under normal circumstances, this would be a time for great excitement for its players but for the participants of the SEA Games 2019-Dota 2 Discipline, it was a completely different story.

Just last week, a mere ten days before the start of the competition, developer Valve released the Outlanders patch (7.23) to Dota 2, which added two new heroes, reworked key map features, and a revamped levelling system just to name a few. This was a huge change to the game and considering that the participants of the SEA Games-Dota 2 Discipline were training for months in preparation-only for the proverbial rug to be pulled under them just one week out.

On top of all that, with the games fully underway Saturday, Valve released another patch midway through the day, this time admittedly a smaller one in “Patch 7.23c”. It caught everyone off guard nonetheless.

Talking to Sibol Dota 2 Coach Pao Bago, he stated that even though it was quite the shake up, in the world of professional sports the first adjustment was simply par for the course. It was the smaller, sudden surprise that really threw them for a loop.

“The first patch we expected because right after a major event there’s usually a patch, so that’s no surprise for a professional player. But having one while you’re on the floor” as he smiles and shakes his head.

“That was a real curveball for us” he chuckles.

“I remember we just wrapped up the match against Laos we went to stretch and go to the bathroom. When we came back there was someone running through the floor shouting ‘There’s a patch! There’s a patch! Coaches, Managers, Please there’s a patch!”

“So that’s how I found out. I didn’t even know until I someone was yelling about it at the competition floor.”

“[I had a] Slight Migraine. [A] Sudden onset Migraine.” he jokes. “But after that we just drank some water and we decided that it’s not over yet.”

Bago says that no matter how big or small these changes are, it would be unwise to overlook them:

“In a lot of ways it’s like [as they say:] ‘The more things change the more things stay the same’ but at the same time you have to be mindful of them. For the team, it took awhile for us to get the hang of it but the opening salvo of today was a big confidence booster for us which verified everything we practiced for so were happy with that.”

Bago and the rest of the Sibol-Dota 2 team ended up in the day at the top of their Group defeating Laos 2-0 and drawing with Myanmar to advance to the Upper Bracket Finals against Vietnam tomorrow. Hopefully, there will be less drastic surprises in store for the team in their bid for the gold.
