GGWP PC Game of the Year: PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds

The multiplayer online battle royale game PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds was one of the biggest surprises in the gaming world this year. Unlike Cuphead, PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds wasn’t anticipated after years of being shown gameplay and trailers. Unlike Divinity: Original Sin 2, it wasn’t a sequel to an already highly acclaimed series.

Despite not being the first battle royale game, PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds can be considered the defining game of the genre after its release in Steam Early Access in March 2017. The game itself has its roots as a mod in Arma 2 and eventually H1Z1 created by Brendan “PlayerUnknown” Greene, inspired by the 2000 Japanese film Battle Royale. Greene was then taken in by South Korean MMO and mobile game publisher, Bluehole. They started on the game with a team of 35 developers but has since expanded to 70 by June 2017.

The game itself has a pretty simple premise as players are brought to an island with 99 other players and the goal is to be the sole survivor. Players are brought with only the clothes on their back and are left to loot the island for weapons, armor, and healing items.

Unlike other titles in contention, the story of the battle royale game lies in the gamers and their experience each time they enter a game. Each kill, each missed shot, each death, each moment made with friends create a story unique for each player.

Its rise to the top the charts was quite unique. Their decision to tap into the some of the established and popular battle royale streamers instead of using traditional means like releasing trailers and teaser was quite the risk but a risk that paid off well. It was here that it started to grow as the game piqued the interest of viewers of the different streamers and from here grew to the their friends and so forth.

Since being released in Early Access, PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds has broken Dota 2’s record as the most played game on Steam and has also climbed the ranks as one of the most played games on Twitch. It has just been recently released and will surely continue to change the landscape of battle royale games.

PlayerUnkown’s Battlegrounds is the GGWP PC Game of the Year because of its unique and thrilling gameplay. To add to this, it has made its mark as it made many milestones in the gaming world throughout the beginning of its lifespan while also being a new title on the block.
