League of Legends Patch 8.4: The Ability Power item changes
Posted by cmsadminGG February 24, 2018

The mid-Split patch, Patch 8.4 is here and it’s massive; looking into a big variety of champions, items, runes, jungle mechanics, and more. It also introduces two new skins, Dark Star Jarvan IV and Dragon Master Swain.

Because the patch notes is quite lengthy, it will be divided into different articles. We’ll take a look into the Ability Power (AP) items. Most of which involves adjusting current items paired with the addition of new items. Riot hopes to give AP players more diversity as far as itemization goes aside from the current norm of building Morellonomicon followed by damage items.

Twin Shadows
BUILD PATH Fiendish Codex + Aether Wisp + 650 gold
TOTAL COST 2400 gold
ABILITY POWER 60
MOVEMENT SPEED 7%
COOLDOWN REDUCTION 10%
UNIQUE ACTIVE  Spectral Pursuit: Summons 2 Spooky Ghosts that hunt down nearby champions, revealing them and Haunting them on contact. Haunted enemies are slowed by 40% for up to 5 seconds based on the distance the ghosts travel. (90 second cooldown)

The first is a familiar item, Twin Shadows, an item that was removed back in Patch 5.22 because of the introduction of Frost Queen’s Claim. Because of the recent changes to support items, it was expected to see Twin Shadows make a comeback. Looking at the item, it looks like a good fit for players that want to chase and look for their next meal. It also looks highly viable for supports offering everything that a support can want.

Oblivion Orb
ABILITY POWER 25
HEALTH 200
UNIQUE PASSIVE Touch of Death: +15 flat magic penetration

The next item is a new item, the Oblivion Orb. It builds from Ruby Crystal + Amplifying Tome + 665 gold with a 1500 gold total cost. It builds into two items, Morellonomicon and Haunting Guise. It offers an early flat magic penetration item while also offering health. A combo that may be ideal for mages facing against chunkier champions in lane.

Morellonomicon
BUILD PATH Lost Chapter + Fiendish Codex + Amplifying Tome + 665 gold ⇒ Oblivion Orb + Blasting Wand + 650 gold
TOTAL COST 2900 gold ⇒ 3000 gold
ABILITY POWER 100 ⇒ 80
NEWHEALTH: 300
MANA No longer grants 400 mana
UNIQUE COOLDOWN REDUCTION No longer grants 20% unique cooldown reduction
UNIQUE PASSIVE Touch of Death: +15 flat magic penetration
UNIQUE PASSIVE Cursed Strike: Magic damage dealt to champions inflicts them with Grievous Wounds for 3 seconds
UNIQUE PASSIVE Magic damage dealt to champions below 35% health no longer inflicts them with Grievous Wounds for 8 seconds—this was replaced by Cursed Strike above
UNIQUE PASSIVE Enemy champion takedowns no longer restore 20% of your maximum mana

Due to its popularity because of the mana and cooldown reduction, the Morellonomicon has been ‘reworked’ this patch. One of the biggest change is that it no longer builds out of the Lost Chapter which means it loses the mana and mana restoration upon leveling. It remains to be good against tanks because it retains the Grievous Wounds but this time around, it is applied regardless of how much health the target has.

The new Morellonomicon may be better for mages that want more health than mana and cooldown reduction, one champion that comes to mind is Vladimir.

While we’re on the Oblivion Orb path, Haunting Guise now has increased AP from 25 to 35 and no longer has the +15 flat magic penetration from its the former unique passive, Eyes of Pain. Instead, it gets a new unique passive, Madness, which upon damaging champions, increases the damage the player deals by 2% per second until exiting combat. This stacks up to 10%.

The unique passive change to Haunting Guise also carries over to Liandry’s Torment.

The Lost Chapter used to build into the Morellonomicon but from here on out it builds into Luden’s Echo, Hextech GLP-800, and Archangel’s Staff. Along with this, it gets 10% cooldown reduction which is introduced as a unique passive, Haste. This bumps up its cost from 900 to 1100.

Luden’s Echo has a change in build path and now builds from Lost Chapter + Amplifying Tome + Blasting Wand + 915 gold. Because of the change, the +10% movement speed has been removed and replaced by the Haste unique passive. Luden’s Echo also offers 500 mana on top of all these changes.

Out of the three items that builds from Lost Chapter, Luden’s Echo still deals the most damage.

Like Luden’s Echo, Hextech GLP-800 has its build path replaced and will now build with Lost Chapter + Hextech Revolver + 850 gold. It also has 500 mana, up from 400 mana, along with the Haste unique passive. Two things that were removed though were its flat health stat and the ability to restore mana and health via the Eternity unique passive. Another notable change to it is a narrower cone but further range.

Despite the removal of the health to Hextech GLP-800, it will still offer catching ability through the Frost Bolt active.

The last Last Chapter related item is Archangel Staff. An item that players go for more mana and it’s getting even more mana this time around with an increase from 200 to 650. It does see a decrease in AP from 80 to 50.

Archangel Staff will remain to be the go-to item for mana reliant champions especially with its increase in mana. However, with a massive drop in flat AP, players will have to look to other items for more damage.

Spellbinder
ABILITY POWER 100
MOVEMENT SPEED 10%
UNIQUE PASSIVE Nearby allied and enemy spellcasts charge Spellbinder up to a cap (100 maximum)
UNIQUE ACTIVE Gain a maximum of 30% decaying movement speed and 100 ability power for 4 seconds, based on charges spent (60 second cooldown)
The last AP item is a new addition, Spellbinder which builds out of Aether Wisp + Needlessly Large Rod + 700 gold for a total cost of 2800 gold. With the removal of the movement speed from Luden’s Echo, it made sense to introduce an AP item that offered the movement speed.

Spellbinder looks like a good fit on champions like Aurelion Sol or Twisted Fate or mages that want to get around the map quicker. Along with this though, it looks like a good item for AP supports, offering more potent shields and heals (and firepower) while also offering more mobility around the map.
