Stage 1 of the Overwatch League Inaugural Season has ended, and it’s London Spitfire that emerged victorious, after defeating both Houston Outlaws and fellow all-Korean squad New York Excelsior in the Stage 1 Title Match.

Though before the Title Matches, the final three games of Stage 1 were first played. Eventual finalists, Spitfire and Excelsior, opened the day with an exciting match that went to a fifth deciding game. At the end of the series though, it was Excel that took the win 3-2.

The next two matches were just as close; Houston Outlaws defeated Boston Uprising 3-2, while Philadelphia Fusion took the win over Florida Mayhem 3-2. With the Outlaws’ win, they secured second place in the standings.

Here are the standings at the end of the Stage 1:

For those not familiar with the Overwatch League’s format, the top three teams at the end of every stage will face off in Title Matches to determine the Stage winner. The winner of every stage wins an extra cash prize on top of their Season 1 winnings.

As the 2nd and 3rd placers, Outlaws and Spitfire faced off to determine who will move on to go up against NYXL. Outlaws hit the ground running in Game 1 with a victory on Dorado. But after that game, it was all Sptifire as the London-based team won three straight matches to secure a rematch against Excelsior.

Spitfire and Excelsior’s rematch at the Grand Finals lived up to the hype! Excelsior started off strong, as they took the win in Games 1 and 2. While Excel looked poised to win in Game 3 on Horizon, Spitfire kept their series hopes alive with a win.

The Game 3 win looked to have awakened Spitfire, as they proceeded to have strong showings in the next two games. In the end, Spitfire managed to reverse sweep the Excelsior to secure the Overwatch League Season 1 – Stage 1 Championship.

Overwatch League Season 1 continues with Stage 2 this February 22, 2018. Season 1 will have four stages in total, after which the top six teams will move on to the Season 1 Playoffs this July.
