Netflix Unveils First Look at Henry Cavill’s Geralt from live-action The Witcher
Posted by Raphael Leynes on July 02, 2019

Netflix has finally given us a peek at what Geralt, Yennefer, and Ciri look like in their forthcoming live-action adaptation of The Witcher.

Behold:

The Witcher is based of a series of short stories and novels by Polish writer Andrzej Sapkowski chronicling the adventures and exploits of main protagonist Geralt of Rivia. It has since be adapted into a hit videogame series by Polish video-game developer CD Projekt Red with its recent entry The Witcher 3 being the hailed as one of the best games of the decade and leaving a trail of universal acclaim.

In the Netflix series, slated for release late this year, Henry Cavill plays the series protagonist Geralt of Rivia, an infamous, cold-hearted monster hunter called a Witcher. Using his training and body modification, as well as supernatural abilities of his own, Geralt takes down deadly beasts that plague the land, of course while earning some extra coin on the side.

Cavill, better known for his roles in high-profile Hollywood films such as Man of Steel and Man From U.N.C.L.E., appears to look the part adequately as far as these photos are concerned. His body type perfectly suits the role while his stoic glare evokes the same grizzled and jaded cool as the Geralt we know. He could stand to be a little paler and more gaunt but that’s just the nitpicker in me.  We’ll just have to see if his acting chops are up to snuff to bring the character to life when the series debuts near the end of this 2019.

There is a concern that Geralt only appears to have one of his two iconic swords. Fans of the series will know that Witchers such as Geralt have two swords, a steel sword to fight human opponents and a silver sword to vanquish monsters. Perhaps, there will be a plot point in which Geralt acquires the sword? He does appear in the series sans his iconic s or is this an (unlikely) oversight from the marketing team? I guess only time will tell at this point.

Netflix as has also revealed the Anya Chalotra as Yennefer of Vengerberg, an on-and-off love interest for Cavill’s Geralt but more importantly a powerful sorceress who commands mystic forces and the elements themselves to kick wholesale butt.

Freya Allan, also stars beside Cavill and Chalotra as the princess Ciri, Geralt’s adopted daughter who’ll eventually become a formidable monster-slaying witcher in her own right.

Finally, as an added bonus, we’ve taken the liberty to throw in these side by side comparisons between the characters in the videogames and the live-action series just to see how they match up:
