Pyke, the Bloodharbor Ripper champion reveal

Riot Games recently unveiled the full kit of the latest champion, the Bloodharbor Ripper, Pyke.

They lived up to the concept of having a dark-themed champion, with his story giving him reason to hate the people around him. This was after he was abandoned by his crew to drown to the leviathans of the deep. He didn’t stay dead though and now the Bloodharbor Ripper look to exact revenge on those that left him to die.

Before we take a look at the skills, take a look at the amazing teaser that they released prior to the reveal.

Passive: Gift of the Drowned Ones

The passive of Pyke makes it so he rapidly regenerates some of the health recently lost to enemy champions when he is unseen by enemies. Along with this, Gift of the Drowned Ones converts his bonus health into bonus attack damage instead.

Gift of the Drowned Ones allows Pyke to trade against his lane opponents especially when near a bush or when partnered with Ghostwater Dive.

Q: Bone Skewer

His first skill, Bone Skewer has two activations depending on what the Pyke wants to do. A tapped Bone Skewer stabs and greatly slows all enemies in front of him while a held Bone Skewer readies and throws his harpoon. The harpoon impales the first enemy struck and pulls them a fixed distance towards him.

Bone Skewer is an interesting skill that has crowd control regardless if players decide to hold it or tap it. Learning when to use one over the other will be the difference between good Pykes and average ones.

W: Ghostwater Dive

Ghostwater Dive gives Pyke camouflage and a significant increase in movement speed that decays over a few seconds. Camouflage hides him from view while enemies remain outside his immediate area. Attack or casting spells immediately breaks this.

This will be best used either as a chases or disengage skill or to proc Gift of the Drowned Ones to either escape or get back in. As his main mobility tool, one can expect that Ghostwater Dive will have a relatively long cooldown.

E: Phantom Undertow

With Phantom Undertow, Pyke dashes and leaves behind a drowned phantom in his original position. The phantom returns to Pyke deals damage and stuns enemies it passes through after a delay.

This seems good following a Ghostwater Dive to get a pick on an enemy target or targets. Along with this, mastering the phantom and where it passes will be crucial to making even better plays. Phantom Undertow also seems to be a good setup for Bone Skewer after the phantom comes.

R: Death from Below

Death from Below makes Pyke strike in an X-shaped area, blink to them, and execute those below a certain flat amount of health. Enemies in the X that are not executed take damage equal to this amount. If Pyke kills an enemy in the X, the last ally to assist him gains full kill gold. In addition, he can also instantly use Death from Below again for a short period of time.

Quite clearly, this is the familiar execute skill but the full kill gold aspect gives Pyke players a reason to steal a kill especially when with a carry alongside. Two people getting full kill gold is just too good to pass up, after all.

His kit seems to allow him to survive in a solo lane and upon reaching level 6 will work well with constant ganks whether initiated by the jungler or by the Pyke player themselves. Whether he’ll find his home in the bottom lane, helping his AD Carry stay alive or in a solo lane trying to outplay his lane opponent, time will tell.
