SEA Games 2019: Esports Makes Historic Debut

Today was definitely one for the history books as Esports made its momentous debut in the Southeast Asian Games 2019 held in the San Juan Arena in San Juan Quezon City. This marks the first time ever that Esports has been made into a medal event in any competition of this caliber. Here’s what happened during the opening ceremony:

The National Anthem

As with all great sporting events in the country, the ceremony started out with the singing of the national anthem of the Philippines.

The Presentation of Flagbearers

The national anthem was followed shortly by the presentation of the flagbearers of each of the nine countries participating in the Esports Leg of the 30th SEA Games namely: Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam.

The athletes will be competing in the Starcraft II, Mobile Legends, Arena of Valor, DOTA 2, Hearthstone and Tekken 7

San Juan Mayor Francis Zamora Welcomes The Crowd

San Juan City Mayor Francis Zamora graced the crowd with his presence on his birthday no less! The honorable Mayor gave a short but sweet welcoming address citing how happy he was in welcome everyone to the city and emphasizing the historic importance of today’s events. He also talked a little bit about the life and struggle of an athlete, being one himself during his college days for the De La Salle Green Archers. He also mentioned that it was his birthday today and that “the biggest birthday gift [he’ll] ever receive is having [everyone] here in City of San Juan”

CEO of Razer Ming-Lian Tan, Addresses SEA Youth

The Co-founder and CEO of Razer, Min-Liang Tan also came up and said a few words. As the official hardware partner of SEA Games 2019, he stressed the importance of the esports to the youth and the subsequent importance of our youth to all of our various nations.

Kenneth Fok With His Welcome Address

The President of the Asian Electronic Sports Federation, Kenneth Fok also touchingly addressed the crowd stating that the growth and development of esports today can largely be attributed to the everyone in attendance today, from the organizers, to the politicians, the players and the fans. He also mentioned that “Esports is not ‘the next big thing’ it’s already here and its been on a rapid rise in the recent years in every single way.”

Philippine Olympic Committee President Abraham Tolentino Testifies to Importance of Esports

Congressman Abraham Tolentino, president of the Philippine Olympic Committee also said a few words highlighting the fact that this is the first inclusion of esports as a medal event for competitions of this caliber, even beating the Olympics and the Asian Games to the punch.

The Athletic Oath Led By Jia Dee With Abraham Tolentino

Jacinta Dee, our representative for the Hearthstone discipline, also led the recitation of the Oath of Sportsmanship joined on stage by Cong. Abraham Tolentino.

Let The Games Begin!

Finally, all the previous speakers were joined by other esteemed guests in the official start of the games. This being the world of video games and esports, the obvious way to kick off the games is with a ceremonial button press!
