The International 2019: Team Liquid Remains Undefeated, EG’s Run Ends
Posted by Martin Patino on August 23, 2019

Back during the Group Stage of The International 2019, Team Liquid didn’t look like the top-tier, championship team they were in years past, losing most of their games and ending up in the Lower Bracket of the Main Event. But it’s now seeming like the team were somehow holding back as the TI7 champions have yet to drop a game since the start of the Main Event.

After eliminating RNG in dominating fashion at the start of the day, Team Liquid then had to face the same team that eliminated them back in TI8, Evil Geniuses. And it looked as if the match was going to be a repeat of last year as EG took control of most of the first game of the series. But Liquid was able to execute an amazing comeback in the final minutes of the game to steal away the lead and the victory from EG.

Liquid then took the momentum from their comeback in Game 1 to completely dominate EG in the second game. Lasting only around 30 minutes, the game ended with a shocking score of 33-9 in Liquid’s favor as the TI7 champions just steamrolled through EG on the backs of Miracle’s Ember Spirit and w33’s Alchemist to seal their revenge and end the TI9 run of EG.

The third lower bracket match of the day saw Infamous, one of the most exciting teams to watch in the tournament, play their hearts out against Team Secret. While Infamous ultimately lost the match 0-2 against the veteran squad, the first game of the series saw the South American squad somehow hold their own against Team Secret before the latter doubled down to secure the first game. Sadly, the second game of the match didn’t go as well as for Infamous as Team Secret put pedal to the metal to quickly dominate their opponents and win the series.

Team Secret will have to face Vici Gaming in Day 5 of the Main Event to see who will go against Team Liquid in the semifinals of the lower bracket. Day 5 will also see PSG.LGD and OG face each other once again in the upper bracket finals to decide which team will be the first grand finalist of TI9.
