This is the story of the best and most heartwarming thing I’ve seen in Taipei Game Show or in any gaming/geek convention, probably ever.
During the final hours of Taipei Game Show 2019, I had been making my final rounds through the nearly empty Taipei World Trade Center. It was the last day of the show, late on Monday afternoon, some booths were already packing up, the last few events were winding down and the crowds had dwindled down to a few dozen stragglers. There was barely any trace of the staggering 320,000 people that had visited the humongous venue over the past 4 days.
I had been going around taking my last few shots for our coverage while also trying to savor the last bits of con left. I’m sentimental like that.
I eventually made my way to the Ubisoft booth, one of the biggest booths at the show, where a large crowd has gathered. There was someone speaking to them on a mic in Chinese. Investigating closer I noticed that the crowd of maybe 30 something people had all been wearing bright orange t-shirts with the Ubisoft logo at the back–they were staffers and attendants at the Ubisoft booth!
I had recognized the guy on the mic as well, it was Leon Chang, the marketing director and Head honcho of the Ubisoft presence at the show. We had met him throughout the week when he showed us around the booth.
He was a super sweet guy so at first I thought that this was a pretty nice gesture–thanking his staff for all the hard work they put in after almost a grueling week at TGS 2019. Catering to thousands of clamoring fans diligently and respectfully could not have been easy. So I thought it was nice that Leon hopped on the mic and made them all feel appreciated.
That alone would have been enough to lift anyone’s spirit. And judging by the applause and cheers after Leon’s words, it had worked.
Then something amazing happened.
Leon had given a signal and everyone in the crowd began to raise their mobile phones to the sky!
Without missing a beat, the large LED Screen at the front which was used for The Division 2 trailers, suddenly fired up Just Dance Mobile to roar of the crowd! There were smiles and laughter all around as everyone got ready to dance.
And dance they did.
From the Just Dance theme, All You Gotta Do (is Just Dance)…
…to DNCE’s Kissing Strangers feat Nicki Minaj…
and even to Let It Go from Disney’s Frozen of all things!
At the end of their epic three-song dance break, which included , Kissing Strangers by DNCE and Let It Go from Disney’s Frozen of all things, everyone had built up quite a sweat but had big, happy smiles on their faces.
A total of about 48 people had joined the mobile session and danced the stress away. And in a surprise ending, Leon had called up the person with the best score among all of them to front– where a brand new UHD monitor had been waiting for its new funkadelic owner to the cheers and jeers of the crowd!
It was amazing.
Halfway through the first chorus of Let It Go, my cheeks had started to hurt from smiling so much. But I didn’t care. It felt like I was having just as much fun as everyone. And I was really happy with what I just witnessed. It had been the perfect way to cap off Taipei Game Show 2019. To send everyone home with a smile and take all that stress and let it go.
