Badass Magic Granny, Lola Tsora Joins Bayani: Kanino Ka Kakampi!
Posted by Raphael Leynes August 29, 2020

A new character is making their way to premier Filipino hero fighting game, Bayani: Kanino Ka Kakampi and it’s none other than the badass spirit-wielding granny Lola Tsora! Our new favorite green-haired senior citizen joins the roster of now 8 playable heroes composed of Joe, Dre, Tonio, Emilio, Leon, Rio and Fernando all based from Philippine National Heroes.

Lola Tsora is sort of a cross between a mystical shaman and a mad scientist that also sports a gas mask and dream catcher-like staff. In Bayani’s story, Lola Tsora was also responsible for the resurrection of Dre (based on Andres Bonifacio) at the behest of Oria (Gregoria de Jesus). Lola Tsora can also wield the power of both light magic that comes from the moon and dark magic that draws from an ancient gargantuan respect called the Bakunawa. In Philippine Mythology, the Bakunawa once ate the moon causing a lunar eclipse, so it’s a cool touch that Lola Tsora is able to draw magical energies from traditionally opposed sources.

While she moves slow and has low HP, as people of her age usually do, she can wield her arcane magic to keep her opponents at bay. As a zoning-focused character her gameplay will revolve around doing damage to her enemies from a distance with her projectiles; Light magic pushes her opponents away and Dark magic burns them. She can also combine the Dark and Light Magic Attacks to hit here opponents multiple times and cause massive damage. When things get a little too close for comfort she can always teleport away and continue her onslaught from a safer distance

We will be able to find out more about Lola Tsora and the rest of the Bayani characters in the game’s Story Mode which is one of the next development milestones for the Bayani team from Ranida Games, Robert Cruz, game director of BAYANI mentions:

“We can now start development for other features of the game, such as Story Mode, an updated Arcade Mode, and a more robust training room. This also means that we can divert more resources to online multiplayer, with a proper lobby. At this point, rollback netcode is a must so we will have to rethink our multiplayer approach. DLC characters will also still be developed alongside the other features but character creation will no longer be the top priority.”

Lola Tsora is based on the Philippine national hero Melchora Aquino more popularly known as Tandang Sora. She aided the Philippine Revolution against the Spanish by opening up her home to the members of the revolution and giving food and shelter as well as nursing them back to health. Once they were ready to leave and join the fight, she’d give them some additional food and money to take with them in their journey—just like how a Lola would. Her legacy is celebrated and honored in modern Philippine culture and Bayani: Kanino Ka Kakampi is just the latest to pay tribute to her heroism!

BAYANI: Kanino Ka Kakampi is also part of Indie Arena Booth Online at Gamescom 2020 happening today! The game is also available on Steam Early Access where it will be discounted at 33% off during Gamescom August 27-30. A free demo of the game can be downloaded on Itch.io here.
