Be A Part of the Alliance in Hearthstone’s Latest Expansion, United In Stormwind
Posted by Paolo Arciga July 05, 2021

After four months of getting lost and having to fight your way out of the Barrens (and more recently, the Wailing Caverns), it’s finally time for another expansion, this time on the brighter side of Azeroth. If it wasn’t obvious yet, this upcoming expansion is going to be all about one of the Alliance’s most steadfast strongholds, Stormwind City, home to countless heroes and hero-hopefuls from Warcraft lore.

Hearthstone’s upcoming expansion, United in Stormwind is scheduled to launch on August 8, and just like the previous expansion Forged in the Barrens, it’s set in one of the most iconic locations in World of Warcraft. It falls under the theme of the Year of the Gryphon, where Hearthstone revisits its Warcraft roots.

As we anticipate the launch of United in Stormwind, here are some of the cool new mechanics and events coming soon to Hearthstone.

Every adventurer needs a Questline

A hero of Stormwind is only as good as the completed quests under their belt, and in Hearthstone it’s no different. United in Stormwind will be introducing Questline spells to the game, which work like the Quest cards in previous expansions but with some key differences.

Questlines come in three levels with different requirements and rewards for each one. When a Questline is completed, you’ll be rewarded with a powerful Mercenary card that could turn the tide in a losing match. Just like Quest cards in previous expansions, these Questlines are perfect for building an entire deck around, giving you a reliable deck for climbing the Ranked ladder.

Barter for a better draw with the new keyword: Tradeable

As for this expansion’s new keyword, we’re getting a mechanic that puts emphasis on the importance of bartering for good equipment when embarking on a quest. Tradeable cards are minion and spell cards that hold decent standalone power, but with an additional card draw mechanic. If you have a Tradeable card in hand that you want to save for later, you can drag the card over your deck to shuffle it back into the deck and draw another card.

It works similarly to older cards with the “Discover a card in your deck” mechanic, but Tradeable cards also give you viable minions and spells to play when you don’t feel like trading in for a better draw.

Gear up with Mounts and Profession Tools

Alongside Questlines and Tradeable cards, United in Stormwind will also feature Profession Tools that provide class-specific bonuses when their requirements are met. These Profession Tools seem to be designed to resemble accessories and auxiliary equipment found in World of Warcraft, and it’s cool to see them implemented as Weapon cards in Hearthstone.

To complete your questing loadout, this expansion will also include a fair amount of Mount cards, which are spells that you cast on a minion to grant them Deathrattle: Summon a [Mount]. If the Mount mechanic looks familiar, that’s because we’ve seen an early version of it in the Journey to Un’Goro expansion: the Spikeridged Steed. The new Mount cards, however, will have additional bonuses aside from stat increases and a Deathrattle summon, so they’ll be significantly stronger than their spikeridged predecessor.

New solo adventures featuring Kurtrus and Gul’dan

As we wait for the launch of United in Stormwind, we’ll be getting two new solo adventures to play throughout July. On July 13, the Book of Mercenaries will have a new playable chapter focusing on Kurtrus Ashfallen, a noble Demon Hunter who teams up with the Silver Hand to fight against the dreadlord Anetheron and the Warlock attempting to summon him in the Barrens.

Speaking of Warlocks, Hearthstone’s favorite fel-flinging necromancer, Gul’dan, is finally getting his own chapter in the Book of Heroes on July 20. His Book of Heroes adventure will include iconic battles from the founding of the Horde, as well as the creation of the first Death Knight.

Big changes ahead for the Battlegrounds game mode

Last, but definitely not least, Hearthstone Battlegrounds has received a soft overhaul in preparation for some bigger updates. With patch 20.8, Kurtrus Ashfallen enters the Battlegrounds as a new Hero, and he’s accompanied by new 6-star minion Archdruid Hamuul. While Kurtrus and Hamuul are the only brand new additions to the Battlegrounds, 11 Heroes and 9 minions received some significant balance changes with the patch.

Hearthstone Battlegrounds is scheduled for a much bigger update in the upcoming patch 21.2, which will add 25 new minions and presumably some new heroes to the game. For more details on the balance changes for the game mode’s heroes and minions, you can check out the full 20.8 patch notes.
