Blizzard has announced that they will be having a livestream this coming Friday, May 21th at 3AM (Manila Time) about the highly-anticipated Overwatch 2. The update will focus on the Player-Versus-Player aspect of the upcoming game will feature members of the Overwatch and Overwatch League team as well as guest appearances by content creators Stylosa and Cuppcaaake. The livestream will be broadcasted on the official Overwatch Twitch and YouTube Channel.
With the 5-year anniversary of Blizzard’s massively popular hero-shooter Overwatch just a few days away, it looks like we’re about to get more acquainted to its looming sequel. While the developers have talked about Overwatch 2 before (most recently in this year’s Blizzconline 2021) this upcoming live-stream will fill us in with more details about the game’s PvP and how it’s shaping up.
The Overwatch 2 segment of Blizzconline which happened earlier this year, touched on a few things about that PVP that we think the livestream will touch or expand upon. First off, the team seems adamant that the PVP feels very different and new as compared to the original.
Jeff Kaplan, formerly the Overwatch Game Director, stated in the presentation (his last before leaving the company in April) that they aim to make Overwatch 2 worthy of being a true sequel:
“We really want Overwatch 2 to feel like the next evolution—a true sequel—to the first game. Not an add-on, it’s not a small part, it’s not an extension of the actual game. This is an evolution and a replacement to the original game. And I think that’s exciting”
They mentioned that they’ve been developing the idea of Role Passives, which are passive abilities for each of the 3 main character roles. For example, for their internal builds, Geoff Goodman, Lead Hero Designer mentions that Tanks will have knockback reduction and generate less ultimate charge for opponents shooting at them; Damage heroes will have higher movement speed to be able to navigate the map faster as well as flank and disengage effectively, and Support heroes have passive healing regeneration.
Kaplan also added that the Tank class iss also being tweaked to be less passive protection characters and more aggressive brawlers.
They also touched on how they’ve reworked some of the design and weapon sounds to make combat more intuitive and visceral by adding more subtle audio-visual cues that inform you of vital combat info such as where the fight is happening or how much ammo you have left.
The Dev team also mentioned the much awaited character Sojourn during the PVP segment of their Overwatch Blizzconline presentation so maybe we’ll hear more about her this Friday as well?
The upcoming 2-hour live-stream this Friday, May 21th at 3AM (Manila Time) on the Overwatch Twitch and YouTube channels are sure to be an informative and must-watch event for devout fans of Overwatch.
The panel will be hosted by Matt “Mr. X” Morello and Mitch “Uber” Leslie as they check in on the new Overwatch Game Director, Aaron Keller; Lead Hero Designer, Geoff Goodman; and Associate Art Director, Dion Rogers as well as guest appearances by Overwatch stalwarts Stylosa, and Cuppcaake!
