FF7 Remake Intergrade Update: PS5 Improvements, New Character, And More
Posted by Donna Almonte June 16, 2021

PS5 owners everywhere just got luckier. You don’t need to buy a brand new disc of Final Fantasy VII Remake to enjoy Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade—or FFVII R IG for short—which was released on June 10, 2021. Just load up your PS4 version (whether license or disc) on a PS5 to enjoy a plethora of new content!

The already gorgeous game has marked improvements on the PS5 and two chapters worth of additional content, as well as a new ending. Let’s dive in, shall we?

The differences between the original PS4 FFVIIR and PS5 FFVIIR Intergrade

Players can now pick between Performance Mode and Quality Mode! The lower resolution Quality Mode runs 4K at 30 fps. For those who want to maximize visuals on a big screen, Performance Mode runs 1620p at 60fps. We can finally see realistic pores on flawless Final Fantasy characters, and Midgar looks more hyperrealistic with added illumination, shadows, and corrected textures. Adaptive triggers are added for the annoying‚ er, I mean dynamic motorbike missions to make them more enjoyable. If you’re up to a challenge, play on Classic Mode because Square Enix has added new features and difficulty settings.

But that’s not all; the loading times are faster; Think 2 to 5 seconds instead of 40 seconds to load up Sector 7. And there’s a Photo Mode for you to show off this gorgeous game as you replay it along with feelings of wonder and nostalgia. I’m glad they decided to update this game well over a year after its release last year.

Episode INTERmission DLC

Intergrade is free, but the DLC ain’t. It’s the same game, but different. Players unlock Yuffie, a materia hunter and 2 whole new chapters about her quest to steal powerful materia! Long-time fans know her as the mischievous ninja who wants to restore her Wutai home before Shinra took over. Her moveset is immensely opposite Cloud’s; she wields a large shuriken and is agile to boot, her ranged attacks hitting multiple targets all at once. Sadly, this DLC is a PS5 exclusive—and it looks like it’ll stay that way for the next 6 months.

But if you’re like me, and you can’t wait to watch extra content and you don’t own a PS5 (or you don’t want to shell out for the DLC), you can watch all the Yuffie-related cutscenes above.

The New Ending

Of course, there’s a new ending that fans get to enjoy, too! Spoiler alert: you’ll see the ending party (Cloud, Aerith, Tifa, and Barret) on the outskirts of Midgar, walking to Kalm. And this is where it deviates from Canon: you’ll see Zack—alive!—going up to the Church and looking for Aerith, only to find locals sobbing over the recent catastrophes.

It’s a great segue into the next, complete sequel and a great way to keep the fandom alive. We’re glad Final Fantasy VII Remake did not get the spinoff treatment because these enhancements (some of it, fixes) give the game replay value. Plus, we can look forward to this parallel universe branching off and going deeper into what supposedly dead characters would have done, had they stayed alive. I’m still hopeful my girl, Jessie, will appear in the next installment, too.

What are your feelings about Intergrade? Are you excited or frustrated that they went off and revived several beloved characters with a Phoenix Down? Do you prefer the classic story, or are you excited to play it on a PS5? Let us know in the comments!
