First Impressions: Olympic Games Tokyo 2020: The Official Video Game
Posted by Christer de Guia August 08, 2019

In March 2019, Sega announced four new games based on the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. One of them was the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020: The Official Video Game.

Olympic Games is a light-hearted sports game where you can create your own avatar, represent your flag, and compete in Olympic Games events with your friends locally and people around the world.

Customization Options

The game allows players to fully customize not only their avatar but also the rest of the nation’s squad as well! From nose length to wrinkles, players can make avatars look like them (or in my case, Sakuragi Hanamichi of Slam Dunk).

Players can also customize their avatar further with a variety of sportswear gear and costumes that athletes can wear just to stand out. If you’re feeling funky enough, you can even let your avatar wear a BMX helmet in the 100m Freestyle swimming event! Players are free to dress up avatars the way they want to on EVERY Olympic Event.

15 Playable Events

There are over 15 Olympic Events you can participate and compete in. These include:

  • 100m dash
  • 110m hurdles
  • 200m Individual Medley
  • Hammer Throw
  • Long Jump
  • 100m Freestyle
  • Baseball
  • Basketball
  • Football
  • Boxing
  • Beach Volleyball
  • Table Tennis (Singles and Doubles)
  • Tennis (Singles and Doubles)
  • BMX Racing

More Olympic events, such as Judo and Rugby Sevens, will be added later in the year.

Realistic Rendition of Olympic Venues

Despite the cartoonish vibe of the avatars, the rendition of the Olympic venues is so top-notch, it makes me feel like you’re actually immersed in the event, cheering for your nation!

Currently going under construction in real life, the New National Stadium (Olympic Stadium) looks jaw-dropping and serves as the venue for track and field, and football events.

Other venues in-game include Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium (Table Tennis), Kokugikan Arena (Boxing), Shiokaze Park (Beach Volleyball, Ariake Tennis Park (Tennis), Saitama Super Arena (Basketball), and more!

Go for Gold at Home and Around the World

There are several modes to choose from in the Tokyo 2020 game. Olympic Games mode allows up to two players (four in online) to compete for medals. Rank Games allows players to be the best in the world by racking up wins to increase their rank.

Intial Impressions: A Homerun

Olympic Games Tokyo 2020: The Official Video Game may not be the top-of-mind sports game for most people but that doesn’t mean it isn’t a fun game to play, whether alone or with friends. The fact that you can represent your country in the biggest sporting stage is another fun bonus.

Olympic Games Tokyo 2020: The Official Video Game is now available in Asia on Playstation 4 and Nintendo Switch for ₱2,195.
