We’ve come a long way since the days of having to buy physical copies of games at game stores, and buying games digitally is now a norm. With the ability to purchase video games digitally and the rising popularity of subscription-based services in other media, it was only natural for video game subscription services to become the next step in video game consumerism.
Buying games digitally saves us the hassle of having to go to the game store, and it also allows for developers to sell their games at lower prices. Online game stores also give older games their second lives, as discounts and bundle promos allow older games to continue to increase in popularity and profit while also cutting customers some good deals. All in all, the online video game marketplace benefits developers and consumers alike, and one of the best deals you can get is a subscription service.
If you’ve always been a diehard physical copy purist, you might have overlooked the merits of a subscription service, but as a former purist myself, I’m here to tell you that these deals are too good to pass up, even for the most stubborn of us out there. Here are five video game subscription services worth checking out.
EA Games have a bit of a reputation problem, and it’s not completely undeserved. When you hear that a game was made or published by EA Games, you can almost always be sure that it’ll be full of ridiculous microtransactions and lackluster gameplay. That said, there are still some pretty good games worth trying out on EA Games’ subscription services: EA Access (for Xbox One and PS4), and Origin Access (for PC).
EA Access offers subscriptions at $4.99 per month and $29.99 per year, while Origin Access offers a basic subscription for $6.45/month and $34.90/year, as well as a premium subscription for $19.90/month and $129.90/year. Both subscription services give you unlimited play time for all of the games in EA’s Vault, which includes The Sims 4, the FIFA games, and Battlefield 5, among many others. EA and Origin Access also provide you with a 10% discount on their games, as well as early trials for yet-unreleased EA games.
While EA’s roster of games isn’t the biggest, it’s made up of more than a few triple A games, and you can play all of them for the price of one game through EA and Origin Access. Don’t let EA’s bad rep distract you from this good deal.
If you’re a PC gamer, you simply must subscribe to Humble Choice. It’s a PC game subscription service that gives you more than 10 games a month, of which you get to choose 9 games to keep forever. Each month you get to play about $280+ worth of PC games, and a subscription only costs $19.99 a month (Premium; you can also get a Lite subscription for $4.99/month and a Basic subscription for $14.99/month). You can also save 25% on the monthly cost for a subscription by subscribing annually.
Aside from the insane value you get from a Humble Choice subscription, you also get up to a 20% discount from purchases in the Humble Store, which offers other game and media bundles with flexible prices that allow you to decide how to distribute your payment. By purchasing Humble Store bundles, you can donate money to charity as well as allocate some funds for game development studios. With Humble Choice, not only do you save a lot of money, but you also get to decide where the little money you spend will go.
When you think of Apple products, video games must be one of the last things to come to mind. After all, iPhones, iPads, and Macbooks aren’t the best for gaming, and a lot of game developers simply don’t have the time or the budget to port their games to iOS or macOS when console and PC gamers make up the majority of their consumers.
With Apple Arcade, Apple finally addresses its devices’ aversion to video games through a subscription service that allows unlimited access to more than 100 games, ad-free, and with multi-device and third party controller compatibility. For just ₱249.00 a month, you can play dozens of fun, high-quality games on your Mac, iPhone, and iPad. If you’re not yet convinced, you can avail of a 1-month free trial from the Apple Arcade website.
PlayStation Plus has been a mainstay for PS4 owners who prefer online multiplayer games over single-player games, but alongside the online multiplayer features that come with the subscription, PS Plus also offers two free games every month that you can keep playing as long as you remain subscribed to the service. You can get a 12-month PS Plus subscription for $59.99, as well as a 3-month subscription and a 1-month subscription for $24.99 and $9.99 respectively. While it isn’t the best offer out there when it comes to the variety of game choices, it definitely gives you a lot of value, as a $59.99 subscription will get you 24 full-length games in a year.
There’s also the lesser-known subscription-based game-streaming service PlayStation Now, which offers subscriptions at the same prices as PS Plus, but instead of giving you online multiplayer features and two games a month, you get to choose from a huge library of PS4, PS3, and PS2 games to play on demand. PS Now also lets you play these games on the PC, just like the Xbox Game Pass. If you’re more keen on variety than online multiplayer, PS Now is worth checking out, as it offers some excellent single-player games like Control, Bloodborne, and Doom.
If you own an Xbox One and you still haven’t availed of the Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, then you better get on it now. It’s currently up for grabs for just $1 (discounted by 93% from its original monthly price of $14.99). It’s unbelievable value when you find out that with a Game Pass Ultimate, you can play games like Kingdom Hearts 3, Red Dead Redemption 2, and The Outer Worlds, all for a dollar! And those are just a few of the major studio games that you gain access to with a Game Pass Ultimate.
The Xbox Game Pass Ultimate also gives you access to PC and Xbox games on your Windows 10 PC, making it a multi-console subscription service. But really, even without all of these bonus features and perks, who can resist a one-dollar subscription service? Is there really any need to say more?
Epic Games doesn’t exactly offer a subscription service at the moment, but for all users with an Epic account and the Epic Games Launcher can receive a free game every week. Sometimes it’ll be an indie game, and sometimes it can be something as huge as GTA V. If you’re a PC gamer, there’s nothing to lose in signing up for an Epic account, as the weekly free games on the Epic Games store come with no strings attached.
At a time like this when it’s impossible to go to the game store to look for good deals and older games with discounted prices, the next best deal you can avail of is a subscription service. For the price of one game or even less, you get more to play for the next 12 months. You might even find some of those games you’ve always wanted to play, hidden in the libraries of some of the subscriptions listed above. Be sure to check them out!
