LoL Worlds 2020 Recap: Fnatic, TES Dominate Leaderboards to Close Group Stage
Posted by Yuri Mangahas October 15, 2020

In contrast to everyone’s expectations, European team and fan-favorite Fnatic toppled first seed squad TSM in a lopsided 25-minute bout to snuff their chances of reaching the quarterfinals of Worlds 2020.

After securing a 1K gold lead over the North American team after two consecutive drake kills, Fnatic engaged TSM in a river clash that took both Biofrost and Bwipo’s champs out of the equation. While TSM seemed very primed to overtake Fnatic’s gold lead, a well-timed drake steal from Selfmade destroyed their plans and allowed the European squad to achieve their power spikes and sweep TSM. With the board clear, Fnatic slew Baron easily and mounted a siege in the middle lane to break the nexus and dominate TSM.

Fnatic would later defeat Gen.G to land the top spot of Group C and transition to the quarterfinals.

Meanwhile, DRX faced Top Esports on Day 8 of Worlds 2020 in a bid to claim the first seed for the quarterfinals. Unlike all matches in the initial weeks of Worlds, it took more than 20 minutes before anyone dropped the first blood on the map. The two competitors played a steady game of attrition until Knight’s Orianna moved to carry out a massive triple kill and flip the table to TES’s advantage.

However, DRX had other plans to deter TES. Chovy led a trap play at the raptor area to engage TSM and secure a two-for-one pickoff. Not wanting to let DRX leverage the clash’s aftermath, TES focused on achieving objectives and snatched Baron away from DRX’s reach. With an enormous gold lead, TES snowballed their champs at the get-go and broke through the bottom lane to cripple TES and obtain the top seed in Worlds 2020.

After eight days of hotly contested matches at Summoner’s Rift, the final competitors have been determined, and they are as follows:

LCK summer champions Damwon Gaming will square off against runner-ups DRX on Day 1 of the quarterfinals. The two teams have tense matches in the past, with DRX eliminating Damwon in the 2020 spring playoffs and the latter trouncing DRX in the summer finals.

On the other hand, top-seed TES will engage Fnatic in a matchup of sorts. Both JackeyLove and Karsa had close encounters with Fnatic in the last two years, and it will be interesting to see how these teams will play out their cards in the quarterfinals.
