Last month’s free games line-up for PS Plus and Xbox Games with Gold had some fantastic inclusions like Control, Gears 5, and Concrete Jungle, and this month we’re getting even more quality games on both platforms. If you’re part of the lucky few who’ve already managed to snag a PS5 or an Xbox Series X/S, there’s even more in store for you on both platforms’ subscription services. For your viewing convenience, here are the games you can download and play for free this month on PS Plus and Xbox Games with Gold.
That’s right, if you haven’t already bought yourself a copy of Final Fantasy VII Remake, this is a great time to make use of your PS Plus subscription (or renew it if you haven’t yet) to play one of 2020’s best games entirely for free. FF7R being in this month’s line-up is no coincidence, because it comes right after the announcement of Final Fantasy VII Intergrade in PlayStation’s recent State of Play presentation.
While the free download version of FF7R won’t be upgradeable to the PS5 version (you’ll need to purchase either the physical or digital version of the game to be eligible for a free upgrade), it’s still an awesome inclusion for people who’ve always wanted to try a Final Fantasy game but needed a little nudge in the right direction.
When you hear the phrase “Dark Souls but with guns,” the first game that comes to mind would be Bloodborne, and while Bloodborne is an excellent game that surpasses the original Souls trilogy in many ways, its gun mechanics aren’t really what you’d expect when you hear that a game has guns in it. Remnant: From the Ashes is Dark Souls but with real guns, or at least Dark Souls but with real video game gun mechanics.
Remnant: From the Ashes is one of those super hard and super rewarding games that fall under the category of “masocore”, and it distinguishes itself from similar games with its focus on long range weapons and combat. You can play it solo or co-op with up to two friends, and it’s a great multiplayer PvE experience that you won’t find in the Souls games.
With FF7R and Remnant: From the Ashes filling the two PS4 freebie slots this month on PS Plus, on the PS5 we’re getting Maquette. It’s a relaxing, meditative puzzle game that explores themes of human relationships through its puzzles. Similar to games like The Stanley Parable, The Talos Principle, and The Beginner’s Guide, this is a perfect game for laying back and taking in your surroundings while figuring out some elegantly designed puzzles.
With Maquette coming to the PS5, its visuals and “recursion” puzzle mechanics are made even more vibrant and detailed, and it’ll surely show off all of the PS5’s graphics processing power.
Finally for this month’s PS Plus line-up, we’re getting an unusual inclusion of a PS VR game. Perhaps to coincide with Sony’s recent announcement of their renewed focus on PS VR, they’re giving away this space shooter for free to bring back some interest in VR games. The PS5 was designed to be able to run VR games, and with the leading VR title being the Steam-exclusive Half-Life: Alyx, it’s possible that Sony is trying to keep up with their competition by starting a revitalization campaign for PS VR.
While Farpoint looks and feels like a generic space shooter, it’s one of the first PS VR titles designed with VR gameplay and the PS VR Aim controller in mind. If you’ve got these PS VR peripherals collecting dust on your shelf, Farpoint being free this month is a good enough reason to pick up that plastic gun and slap on the VR helmet for some alien-shooting action.
Looking at the games on this month’s PS Plus and last month’s Xbox Games with Gold probably makes the GwG line-up for March 2021 look a lot less impressive. Aside from Metal Slug 3, these titles have generally flown above everyone else’s radars. Still, these games can give you a couple of hours of fun.
You’ve got the tactical PvP shooter Warface: Breakout, the hilariously violent Vicious Attack Llama Apocalypse, and the pirate-themed 4X game Port Royale 3, from the makers of the Tropico games. Of course, if these games don’t appeal much to you, it’s never a bad choice to snag the always-fun Metal Slug 3.
