Over the past few months since Nier Reincarnation (sometimes stylized as “Nier Re[in]carnation”) launched in Japan on Feb 18, 2021, we’ve been getting a few details and updates on the game’s worldwide release date. In early May, a tweet from the game’s official English account shared that the game’s localization was already completed, and it only needed some fine-tuning and some preparation for the game’s pre-registration.
In mid-May, the game began its pre-registration campaign for iOS and Android, which was basically a pre-order campaign to gauge the game’s pre-sales. Square Enix also announced that a certain number of pre-registrations would result in bonuses for everyone who plays the game upon release. As of June 2021, Nier Reincarnation has had over 300,000 pre-registrations, with all of its milestones reached. This means that all players will have a variety of bonus in-game currency and items upon starting, and new milestones with more bonuses were added for future pre-registrations.
While we’re not certain yet as to what these gems will be used for, and how the other bonuses like the Enhancement, Weapon Evolution, and Material Packs will affect gameplay, this does reveal that Nier Reincarnation will have some gacha game mechanics despite its mostly story-driven gameplay. If Yoko Taro’s past works are anything to go by, the gacha mechanics of the game might even be integrated into the story in a clever way.
With the game’s pre-registration having progressed smoothly since May, Square Enix have finally announced that Nier Reincarnation will be launching worldwide on iOS and Android on July 28, 2021. The announcement was accompanied by a new opening cinematic for the English-language version of the game, which you can check out below:
Nier Reincarnation follows an ensemble cast of characters led by a main protagonist called The Girl of Light, with the game’s primary setting being a large abstract environment called The Cage. As you navigate The Cage and its many dream-like branches in 2D side-scrolling and 3D platforming mode, you’ll come across enemy encounters that’ll play out through turn-based RPG combat. From the opening cinematic, it appears that you’ll be able to control a party of up to three members, hinting that the game will offer many characters of varying strengths to add to your party. This is most likely where the gacha elements of the game will come into play.
If you’re interested in getting in on Nier Reincarnation’s pre-registration campaign (and hopefully assist in getting us all some more sweet bonuses), you can check out the game’s official site for pre-registration details. For more updates on the game’s characters, as well as a few teaser clips of the gameplay, you can check out its English-language Twitter account, which every so often shares some information about the game with Yoko Taro’s signature style of darkly humorous, vague storytelling.
