PESO, Smart Announce Philippine Qualifiers for 12th Esports World Championship
Posted by Yuri Mangahas September 19, 2020

Filipino hopefuls will now have the opportunity to battle it out with top esports athletes in the international scene in the Philippine qualifiers of the 12th Esports World Championship, an annual tournament that will pit more than 55 member nations from the International Esports Federation at Eilat, Israel.

Organized by the Philippine Esports Organization and powered by Smart in partnership with GGNetwork and One Sports, the qualifiers aim to showcase the mettle of Pinoy esports players in Dota 2, Tekken 7, and eFootball Pro Evolution Soccer 2020.

“We are grateful beyond words to be given the opportunity to help our young esports athletes climb their way to the top. The IESF World Championship qualifiers will showcase the Filpino tenacity in the virtual scene, and we at Smart are ready to support these talented individuals in any way we can,” said Jane Basas, Senior Vice President and Head of Smart’s wireless business individual unit.

Participants in the DoTA 2 and PES2020 qualifiers will go head-to-head in best-of-one matches during the initial rounds. The top four teams will then advance to the playoffs and compete in best-of-three matchups to determine the final contenders for EWC’s regional tourney.

On the other hand, players in the Tekken 7 qualifiers will undergo a series of best-of-three bouts to secure their positions in the playoffs. The final four players will then vie in best-of-five matches to snag the opportunity of representing the Philippines in the regionals.

“Our accreditation as a member of the Philippine Olympic Committee has reaffirmed PESO’s commitment in our esports athletes since 2012, and has given us the momentum we need to help these potential esports professionals compete, challenge and win in the global esports stage,” said Brian Lim, President of PESO.

The qualifiers are slated to take place from Sept. 19 to 20, while the playoffs will run from September 24 to 27.
