As of the past few years, League of Legends developer, Riot Games has been earning the plural form of their moniker by diversifying its game catalog. Since 2019 they’ve launched autobattler Team Fight Tactics, collectible card game Legends of Runeterra, mobile MOBA League of Legends:Wild Rift, and the tactical shooter Valorant.
Today on April 1st, 2021, in a totally not fake press release, Riot Games has announced a new addition to their gaming library, a dating sim set in the Valorant universe called Valorant: Agents of Romance.
Anna Donlon, Executive Producer of Valorant explains how naturally Agents of Romance came as a perfect tool for world-building:
“We’ve been looking into ways to expand and explore the VALORANT universe, even prior to launch, and when we landed on a dating sim, it just made sense,” Donlon said. “We believe that everyone can relate to and enjoy the Agents of VALORANT, whether they’re tac-shooter players or dating sim players.”
Valorant: Agents of Romance will be Riot Games’ first foray into the amorous and intimate genre of dating simulators giving fans of the tactical hero shooter what they’ve wanted from the very launch of the game: a way to officially ship themselves with their Valorant Agent OTP.
In Agents of Romance, players will take on the role of a new recruit in the Valorant Initiative as they train to become a bonafide Valorant Agent and save the world from annihilation. This training also apparently includes going on dates with your favorite Valorant Agents to build chemistry, rapport, and “meaningful relationships” with them. Who said love couldn’t exist in the battlefield?
Joe Killeen, Narrative Writer on both Valorant and Valorant: Agents of Romance stated that he is ecstatic about showing the deeper, intimate, and emotional side of Valorant that can only be explored through a dating sim:
“Our Agents are living, breathing individuals that are as expressive as our players,” Kileen says. “Agents of Romance allows us to put those inner emotions and human connections front and center, and we can explore who these individuals are when the uniform is off and the guns are stored away”
VALORANT: Agents of Romance is allegedly set to launch for PC in 2021.
While we truly want this to be real—even we aren’t immune to the allure of winning and dining our favorite agents even on the brink of extinction—we’d be remiss if we didn’t point out the day of this announcement as April Fool’s Day. Then again, Riot has introduced Dating Sim-like game features into League of Legends before with the Spirit Blossom event in July of 2020 so interested fans might have something to hang their hopes on.
Whether this is a real announcement or more likely an April Fool’s Prank, we’re sure it’s going to be a heck of a riot!
