The July 2021 Free Games Line-up on PS Plus and Xbox Games with Gold
Posted by Paolo Arciga July 06, 2021

Last month’s free games line-up had a great selection of games best enjoyed in multiplayer mode, from fighting games Injustice and Virtua Fighter 5 to the more original multiplayer experiences in Star Wars: Squadrons and Operation: Tango. This month, both PS Plus and Xbox Games with Gold are offering up some pretty good single-player titles alongside some enjoyable casual multiplayer ones. Whether you’re looking for an epic solo adventure or just something to play with friends, you ought to check out this month’s line-up.

Here are the games up for grabs on PS Plus and Xbox Games with Gold for July 2021.

Free Games on PS Plus for July 2021

Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 (PS4)

When it comes to putting out a free game, you can’t really go wrong with a Call of Duty title. It’s a series everyone loves to poke fun at for having repetitive gameplay and a slightly toxic fanbase, but if it’s on PS Plus and you can play it for free with a few of your friends, it still holds up as a solid multiplayer game.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 is a multiplayer-focused game that features no single-player campaign, but makes up for that lack of single-player content with its various multiplayer modes. From regular PvP modes to zombie shoot-em-up co-op and the ever-popular battle royale mode (called Blackout in the game), it’s an enjoyable expansion to the Call of Duty series. While it isn’t particularly exceptional as a first-person shooter, it’s a reliable, accessible FPS that everyone can get into.

WWE 2K Battlegrounds (PS4)

One of our writers had some nice words to say about WWE 2K Battlegrounds, and he’s definitely on point when it comes to the game being the right direction for WWE game adaptations. Just like the WWE in real life, WWE video games have grown to be much more tame than they used to be, and it’s rare to see either of them show off any bone-crunching, brutal action nowadays.

WWE 2K Battlegrounds is what you get when you put together the WWE we know and love with the hyperbolic, cartoonish action of games like Galactic Wrestling and Fire Pro Wrestling. Sure, you won’t find much bloodshed or title fights with child custody at stake, but WWE 2K Battlegrounds’ over-the-top action makes it a much more enjoyable game than the usual WWE game that’s so often all bark and no bite. Don’t knock it ‘til you try it.

A Plague Tale: Innocence (PS5)

For this month’s PS5-only title, PS Plus is offering up the enhanced version of the underrated dark adventure game, A Plague Tale: Innocence. The game features quite a few twists that affect not only the story, but also the core gameplay experience, so I won’t say much to spoil its key twists.

What I will say, is that A Plague Tale: Innocence features an incredibly detailed 14th-century setting, and a fascinating, slightly occult story that centers on hordes and hordes of diseased rats. Both these elements of the game would benefit greatly from a PS5-enhanced version, and it might even be the best-ever way to experience the game aside from a souped-up gaming PC. There’s also a sequel to the game titled A Plague Tale: Requiem coming in 2022, so you’ll have something to look forward to next year once you finish Innocence. You can check out the sequel’s trailer here (contains some mild spoilers).

Bonus: Virtua Fighter 5: Ultimate Showdown (PS4)

If you missed it the first time around, Virtua Fighter 5: Ultimate Showdown will be staying up on PS Plus for another month, so be sure to claim it if you haven’t yet. The fully upgraded version of the original 2012 game was rebuilt from scratch by RGG Studio (also known as the team behind the Yakuza games), and it’s an absolute steal to get it for free.

Free Games on Xbox Games with Gold for July 2021

For this month’s Xbox Games with Gold line-up, the current-gen games are the 2018 side-scrolling space adventure Planet Alpha, and the Monty Python-esque physics simulator-slash-track building hybrid Rock of Ages 3: Make & Break. For the classic games line-up, we’ll be getting Conker: Live & Reloaded featuring its titular foul-mouthed protagonist and signature raunchy humor, and Midway Arcade Origins, which is a compilation that features over two dozen retro games from developer Midway.

Planet Alpha

(Available July 1 to 31)

Rock of Ages 3: Make & Break

(Available July 16 to August 15)

Conker: Live & Reloaded

(Available July 1 to 15)

Midway Arcade Origins

(Available July 16 to 31)
