It’s that time of the month again, and if you haven’t downloaded your free PS Plus and Xbox Live Gold games for July yet, then it’s your last chance to claim them. There were a few titles in last month’s offerings that felt a bit lackluster, but August is looking to be a great month for both PlayStation and Xbox fans. Here are the games that are soon to be up for grabs on PS Plus and Xbox Live Gold this August.
PS Plus subscribers will be getting some solid single-player and multiplayer content this month featuring a remaster of a best-selling classic as well as a brand new, multiplayer battle royale game. For non-PS Plus subscribers, you’ll also get to join in on the fun with a free multiplayer weekend from August 8 to August 9.
A classic from the previous console generation and one of the best-selling games in its franchise, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 gets a visual upgrade in its current-gen Campaign mode remaster. While its multiplayer mode won’t be available as part of this month’s PS Plus offerings, its single-player campaign is one of the most acclaimed and well-loved in the Call of Duty series, and it’s worth checking out even for those who aren’t huge fans of the first-person shooter genre. I
If you missed the chance to follow the world-saving exploits of Roach, Soap, and Ghost the first time, now you can experience it all with upgraded graphics to boot. I recommend getting some tissues ready, because you’ll be surprised what a tearjerker MW2‘s single-player campaign can be.
It’s definitely unusual that this month’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 offering doesn’t come with a multiplayer mode, since most of us subscribe to PS Plus to gain access to online multiplayer, but it seems that this was done to give the multiplayer spotlight to a brand-spanking new game from Devolver Digital, releasing for free on PS Plus this August: Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout.
Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout is what you get when you mix the multiplayer battle royale format with the zany obstacles of Takeshi’s Castle and American Ninja Warrior. Featuring adorable graphics and a multiplayer capacity of up to 60 per lobby, Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout will have you running through hilariously designed obstacle courses to try and remain the last one standing in order to win 1st place. It’s a light and fun twist on the battle royale genre, and with the game coming out on August 4, this is one of the rare times that we’ll be getting a free PS Plus game that’s completely new. You’re gonna want to round up as many of your friends for this one.
If you saw last July’s free games for Xbox Live Gold, you might have been underwhelmed with the relatively lackluster games they’d put up for grabs. It seems that they’re trying to make up for it this month with a selection of two relatively new, highly acclaimed games as well as two classics from the original Xbox generation.
(available from August 1 to August 31 on Xbox One)
Portal Knights is a sandbox RPG with survival and action elements similar to Minecraft, and you can even consider it a more RPG-focused version of Minecraft. In Portal Knights, you’re able to explore procedurally generated levels, collect items from the environment and from enemy drops, and craft structures and equipment to suit your character and play-style. It’s an addictive RPG experience that melds together the combat mechanics of the Zelda games and the crafting and exploration mechanics of Minecraft.
(available from August 16 to September 15 on Xbox One)
Any game that involves mechs battling on a large stage is bound to excite a lot of people (myself included), but it’s rare for a mech game to live up to fans’ high expectations. Override: Mech City Brawl succeeds in doing so, as it provides players with several playable mechs, plenty of customization options, as well as enjoyable single-player and multiplayer modes. With large stages based on real-life locations and dynamic combat mechanics, each mech battle is as thrilling to watch as it is to play. Don’t miss out on this freebie if you’re a mech fan!
(MX Unleashed will be available from August 1 to 15, while Red Faction 2 will be available from August 16 to 31, for both Xbox One and Xbox 360)
If you’re feeling a bit of nostalgia for the original Xbox generation, Xbox Live Gold will also be offering two classics this month: Red Faction II (2002) and MX Unleashed (2004). It’s a nice throwback to early 2000s gaming when local multiplayer shooters and extreme sports games were all the rage.
So those are the free games you can get on PS Plus and Xbox Live Gold this month. For news on the latest in video game freebies as well as new games coming out each month, make sure to stay tuned on our website and Facebook page.
