Valorant’s Act III is nearly complete and all that remains is the arrival of its newest agent Skye. Hailing from the land down under, this Aussie Jungle Commando/Nature Preservationist/Green Lantern is here to support you and your teammates with her vast arsenal of flashes and healing! Riot’s tactical shooter is going green pretty soon so here’s our breakdown on Skye!
“Trailblazer: EQUIP a Tasmanian tiger trinket. FIRE to send out and take control of the predator. While in control, FIRE to leap forward, exploding in a concussive blast and damaging directly hit enemies.”
Trailblazer will be functioning like a grounded version of Sova’s Drone. Skye will be able to use this ability to check corners, track down enemies, and clear sites. Its ability to pounce on enemies and concuss them will also set up enemies for a pick if they’re not too careful.
This does raise a couple of questions though. First off, will the pounce mark the enemy on the map just like the tracking dart from Sova’s Drone? Or is it just purely a localized concussive blast? Secondly, will players be able to destroy the Trailblazer Tiger if they see it coming? The Valorant team is fond of introducing counterplay options with their skills so it’s highly likely that it is possible to shoot the tiger before it pounces on you, however, that has not been confirmed.
Guiding Light: EQUIP a hawk trinket. FIRE to send it forward. HOLD FIRE to guide the hawk in the direction of your crosshair. RE-USE while the hawk is in flight to transform it into a flash that plays a hit confirm if an enemy was within range and in line of sight.
Guiding Light feels like a manual version of Phoenix’s Curveball flash. Skye can control everything about the flash, they can control the direction of its flight and when it deploys its flash. At first glance, it seems like it might feel very cumbersome to manually dictate the hawk’s actions but upon further thought, its degree of control is what makes the ability strong. Its flexibility means that the flash can come from unpredictable angles in the hands of an experienced Skye. This allows Skye to play mind games with their quarry delaying the flash deploy making it hard for opponents to time when to look away.
Once again a few crucial questions come to mind: How far can the hawk travel? Does it have a maximum distance attached to it or is it a time-based thing? Can the Hawk be destroyed? If so, does the flash deploy regardless?
Regrowth: EQUIP a healing trinket. HOLD FIRE to channel, healing allies in range and line of sight. Can be reused until her healing pool is depleted. Skye cannot heal herself.
Regrowth is Skye’s healing spell. It’s only the second skill in Valorant that allows an agent to heal another agent. It’s also the only skill in Valorant that allows the healing of multiple agents. While Regrowth will be very useful for obvious reasons, healing multiple low health allies, snowballing man advantage, and reinforcing to defend from a retake, the skill does have some fair limitations.
First off, Allies need to be in range and in Skye’s line of sight for the healing to happen, which means other agents need to move closer to Skye abandoning their post and potentially exposing themselves to enemy fire.
Secondly, while channeling the Regrowth, Skye will not be able to shoot and is also vulnerable to enemy fire. There’s also the matter of Skye not being able to heal herself which is going to be a problem in terms of her longevity in the game if she plays too aggressively.
Finally, there’s the healing pool. We’re not entirely sure if the pool will regenerate or will be a limited resource as of yet which might mean that Skye needs to choose when and who to heal, wisely.
(Ultimate Ability) Seekers: EQUIP a Seeker trinket. FIRE to send out three Seekers to track down the three closest enemies. If a Seeker reaches its target, it nearsights them.
Seekers is Skye’s Ultimate ability that basically leads your team to the three closest enemies and Omen flashes them. The phrasing here which uses “IF” makes us think that Seekers can be destroyed or outran if their targets react quickly enough. In lieu of that, Seekers does feel like a pretty underpowered Ultimate. If the nearsight does hit its mark, it’s not a guaranteed kill if Skye and their allies don’t follow up correctly.
At best, Seekers will be used as a location tool to find the last few stragglers on the opposing team or maybe discourage pushes by forcing their targets to run away from the Seekers.
Overall, Skye is definitely suited toward the sentinel/ hard support role. She doesn’t have many ways to protect herself or deny areas or even heal herself so I think she really invites a more passive playstyle. On Attack she’ll definitely be put on second man duties, scouting the site with Trailblazer, setting up flashes with Guiding Light for the duelists to come in and clean up. She can also heal her surviving allies post spike to ensure they’re ready to defend against the retake. On defense, she’ll probably help in sussing out where the enemies will be pushing from and using her flash or her ult to stem the tide while her allies rotate.
In terms of power level, at this stage, Skye feels like a mid-tier character. As a healer and all-arounder, Skye will definitely have her strong points in the context of how game-changing Killjoy was, I’d say Skye isn’t really on that level. Skye is essentially a jack of all trades, doing what many Agents can already do but maybe having all that utility in one package is where her value truly lies. Having Skye to do the jobs of Sova, Sage, and Breach, might allow more aggressive team compositions accommodating more duelists and aggressive play.
We’ll have to find out more when Skye welcomes us to the jungle on October 27.
