WWE Battlegrounds is a Step in the Right Direction for WWE Games
Posted by Raphael Leynes July 16, 2020

We’ve said before that arcade-style, over-the-top craziness might just be the slap in the chest that the long-floundering WWE games need to get interesting again. With some new details being released for the forthcoming WWE 2K Battlegrounds game by Saber Interactive, it’s looking more and more like the game is headed in the right direction.

Time to Play The Game

As announced earlier this year, WWE 2K Battlegrounds will be taking the place of the annual WWE game release in 2020 instead of the usual 2K sports-simulation style iteration. Battlegrounds presents a new and exciting refresh for the struggling WWE videogames and a new opportunity to get pro-wrestling video games back into people’s living rooms.

The details that have been revealed so far via press release seem very promising. First off, its core gameplay looks pretty fun. Players can take control of their favorite WWE Superstar or Legend—rendered in a fun cartoonish style— and put the beatdown on their opponents through exaggerated physics-defying moves, elemental power-ups, and environmental interactions.

In an interview with IGN, Sean O’ Connor,  executive producer of WWE 2K Battlegrounds, mentioned that the gameplay will feature more than its fair share of actual wrestling moves as well as over-the-top action. He goes on to state that winning a match will involve pinfalls and submissions like a traditional wrestling match.

The roster will include more than 70 playable characters with a good mix of modern WWE Superstars such as Roman Reigns, Becky Lynch, Samoa Joe, and Kofi Kingston as well as classic WWE Legends like, Stone Cold Steve Austin, The Rock, The Undertaker, Sgt. Slaughter and Mankind. 2K also promises that there will be more superstars to add to the already amazing roster to be released after launch.

The Superstars will all be categorized into different character classes that define their fighting style. There’s the hard-hitting Powerhouse, the tricky Technician, the agile High-Flyer, offense-minded Brawler, and well-balanced All-Rounder. Each of the classes will have their own set of moves, strengths, and weaknesses which will be aligned with your preferred playstyle.

No Holds Barred

Each of Battlegrounds eight unique arenas will have a variety of different weapons you can beat your opponent up with like steel chairs, guitars and even straight-up motorcycles! Each arena will also feature environmental hazards that you can throw yourself off or your opponents into such as helicopters, cars, alligators, and goats.

While there will be dedicated Campaign mode—where you play as one of seven WWE recruits hoping for a spot on the roster with Paul Heyman and Stone Cold Steve Austin as your guide—we think the main appeal of Battlegrounds will come in the multiplayer side of things. There will be both local and online multiplayer featuring up to 4 players through exhibition matches and tournaments as well as a unique game mode called King of the Battleground which is a last man standing mode with four players in the ring and four players on the outside waiting to take the place of an eliminated player.

We’re looking forward to seeing more of the rosters as well as the actual gameplay mechanics of 2K Battlegrounds but what we got so far is a solid base for WWE to make its way back into being the King of the Ring.

If all of that sounds like your jam then WWE 2K Battlegrounds is available now for pre-order in Standard Edition for USD $39.99 (around PHP 1,999 ) which includes WWE Hall of Famer Edge at launch. Players can also order the Digital Deluxe Edition for USD $49.99 (around PHP 2,499) which includes Edge, as well as all versions of “Stone Cold” Steve Austin, The Rock and Ronda Rousey unlocked at the beginning of play, 1100 bonus Golden Bucks which is the in-game currency that can be used to unlock Superstars, as well as cosmetic items.

WWE 2K Battlegrounds will release worldwide on September 18, 2020 for the PlayStation 4 system, the Xbox One family of devices, including the Xbox One X and Windows PC via Steam, Nintendo Switch and Stadia
