Sony Reveals the PlayStation 5
Posted by Yuri Mangahas June 12, 2020

Sony has finally unveiled the PlayStation 5 during the company’s Future of Gaming event, along with a slew of titles that will accompany its release in Holiday 2020.

The Design

The PS5 sports a curved white shell with a black segment filling the gaps between the console’s air vents. The unit also features two variants: the standard model, and the Digital Edition variant. As the name implies, the console’s Digital Edition does not include a disc drive, which suggests that Sony is leaning towards a future without physical media.

Earlier this month, the company teased the PS5’s DualSense, an all-new controller that features adaptive triggers, an integrated microphone, and Haptic Feedback technology. Unlike its predecessors, the controller has a sleek black-and-white design that aligns with the main console’s look.

The Tech

As previously explained by Sony in the console’s “Deep Dive” presentation in April, the PS5 will employ fast SSDs, ray-tracing technology, and a built-in 4K Blu-ray player. Sony promises that the console will allow developers to craft games beautifully and carry out realistic lighting, environment, and model renders.

The PS5 also houses an AMD Zen 2-based CPU with 8 cores at 3.5GHz, 16GB of GDDR6 memory and a custom RDNA 2 AMD GPU that yields 10.28 teraflops of processing power, enough to go toe-to-toe with PCs.

The Games

(L-R, Top to Bottom): Horizon Forbidden West, Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Rachet & Clank: Rift Apart and Demon’s Souls.

Sony has unveiled a plethora of titles that are slated for release on the PS5, including a few revivals and sequel games to boot. Games teased in the event include Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Resident Evil Village, Horizon Forbidden West, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, Sackboy, Pragmata, Square Enix’s Project Athia, and a remake of Demon’s Souls.

The PS5 is expected to hit shelves in December. What do you think of the PS5? Let us know in the comments!
